Independent of a creative process, independent of any thought of theatricality and performativity, I had a breakdown that was completely mundane, and in hindsight, a long time coming.
I grew up in a Korean household. I grew up speaking Korean to my parents, I grew up with Korean children who were the sons and daughters of my mother’s friends, I grew up going to Korean school every Saturday to become a Korean. And yet, Korean-ness felt like a concept so foreign I couldn’t even begin to wrap my head around it.
Culture Girl is the result of a cultural “belonging” to a country that I had never been to and didn’t exist – an internet amalgamation of the world.
This performance incorporates elements of Korean mask dance (Talchum).
